Children as young as nine have been involved in a spate of self-harm incidents in immigration detention facilities, despite child psychiatrists issuing repeated warnings over the past decade of the dangers of detaining children. The incidents include children slashing their wrists, arms and bodies with razor blades, a 17-year-old boy who tried to hang himself, and another 17-year-old boy who repeatedly bashed his head against a metal pole after hearing that a review of his case had failed. The boy had to be taken to hospital. The documents show there were 26 self-harm incidents involving children at Darwin’s two detention facilities between August 2010 and November 2011. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship says there has since been a ”significant decrease” in self-harm incidents, but a spokeswoman was unable to be specific.

A man burned himself to death in western France on Wednesday after losing unemployment benefits in a suicide that is becoming part of a worrying trend as the country struggles through tough economic times. The case of Djamal Chaab, whose application for jobless benefits had been rejected by the agency earlier in the week, has caused consternation in France. It is the latest in a growing list of job-related suicides to hit the country, which is struggling with low growth and record high unemployment.
Personal information about Chaab remains limited. According to reports in the French media, he was an Algerian national with a long-term residency permit and a trained metalworker. His death has heightened fears about France’s weak economy and a troubling trend of self-immolations.

Russia has disassociated itself from the language used in a statement on fundamental human rights and freedoms by the G8 Foreign Ministers Meeting Chair, as the document listed both gays and bisexuals as separate groups.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Sergey Ryabkov told reporters that Russia considers inadmissible any aggressive propaganda and imposing of ways of life and values that could insult the feelings of a significant part of society, under the excuse of protecting the rights of so-called sexual minorities.
The statement of the G8 Foreign Ministers Meeting Chair reads that “the ministers reaffirmed that human rights and fundamental freedoms are the birthright of all individuals, male and female, including lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender individuals”. A remark is included in the document that the Russian Federation disassociates itself from this language, given the absence of any explicit definition or provision relating to such a group or such persons as separate rights holders under international human rights law.
