Five months after Florida A&M University drum major Robert Champion Jr. died following a pummeling by fellow members of the marching band, 13 people have been charged in his death.
The death of the 26-year-old Champion, who was gay, has brought about a focus on college hazing rituals. The beating took place aboard a chartered bus parked outside of a Orlando hotel after a performance.
Eleven are charged with hazing resulting in death which is a felony. Two others face misdemeanor charges. The felony and misdemeanor offenses could result in nearly six years in prison if convicted.
More serious charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter were not pursued.
‘I thought it should send a harsher message,’ the victim’s mother, Pam Champion, said in an interview with CNN after the charges were announced.

Gossip blogger Hilton (real name: Mario Armando Lavandeira) has been slapped with a lawsuit after reporting that the man who designed Jolie’s ring had previously been found guilty of fraud.
Hilton’s report, published April 17 on his Coco Perez offshoot site, claimed that jeweler Robert Procop, who designed the ring with Pitt, had previously been successfully sued for fraud by a customer named Roy Allenstein. Allenstein supposedly discovered that the necklace he purchased from Procop contained only 17.62 carats of diamonds instead of 25.5 carats after having it appraised.
But Procop says that’s a lie, and now Hilton has found himself in a real-life court drama.
“The statements that Plaintiff was ‘guilty’ of fraud in connection with his jewelry business and that a court had awarded a judgment against him for that fraud is libelous on its face,” the suit, filed Wednesday in Los Angeles, reads. “Those statements expose Plaintiff to hatred, contempt, ridicule and obloquy and they naturally have a tendency to injure Plaintiff in his occupation as a jeweler and jewelry designer.”

A woman has been arrested as police investigate a vile racist rant on a tram.
Police were told about the YouTube video called My Tram Experience, in which a woman with a child on her knee launches a foul-mouthed tirade against her fellow travellers.
Swearing repeatedly in the two-and-a-half minute video, she accuses others on the Croydon Tramlink of not being British.
Viewers disgusted at her comments brought it to the attention of the British Transport Police.
The BTP tonight said on their Twitter account: “We’ve arrested a 34yo woman for racially aggravated public order offence as a result of #mytramexperience video brought to our attn.”
The astonishing footage was posted on YouTube yesterday and had had 124,973 views by 5.30pm today.
