In 2003 Paul Holmes, who is one of the intellectual and ethical minnows who swim in the shallows of NZ public life, described the then UN Secretary General Kofi Annan (from Ghana) as a ‘Cheeky Darkie’. Hotere responded by creating a series of artworks including ‘White Drip to Mister Paul Holmes’.

Few who have followed him over the years will forget his campaign on behalf of Eve van Grafhorst, the HIV victim of a blood transfusion who was shunned by Australia but welcomed by Hastings. Paul did so much in broadcasting to dispel the notion that Eve’s condition was highly infectious and was extremely upset when she died aged 11.

With Paul Holmes murdering current affair journalism on TV, it has been hard for the gutter press to find anything to praise him for with his recent death. The man himself, and the press seem to think his biggest contribution to NZ media was his work with Eve von Grafhorst and spreading AIDS education In NZ. This seems quite incorrect.
The Health Department here were incredibly fast in getting factual information out on AIDS/HIV, both in how to prevent infection, but most importantly, that is was very hard to contract, and touching would not infect you. these facts had been out for years and accepted in NZ. There was never a huge ‘hate for AIDS’ in NZ, because we got education out very early on.
And that also totally ignores the angle Holmes took in his covering of Eve. It was always ‘isn’t Australia ignorant and horrible. She had to fled evil Australia and come to NZ to find peace and happiness.’ And she did, because people did not care. To say Holmes ‘educated the NZ public about AIDS’ is total rot. We knew, we did not care. we got a pat on the back for being better than Australia’. He did nothing but spread a feel good story about our country, whilst increasing hate towards Australia.
I could mention how he focused on Pediatric Aids only, and never covered adults with AIDS.
I could mention after 9/11, his interview with friends of Mark Bingham, who died on United 93. Mark had toured NZ learning about gay rugby teams. Was there a single mention of his sexuality on the show? No, as that may have been icky.
I do not believe in canonizing the dead. It is stupid. But to canonize a man who turned current affairs journalism into entertainment, and to also have to lie about what he actually did, seems very sad for me.
