Danny Mulheron. Rick Ellis resigns: The man who sold Avalon, the best public owned studio in Australasia. Under his stewardship he let a flagship of Public broadcasting become mothballed like the NFU, its equipment flogged off, or rented out to overseas productions as a 3D studio. ‘Rage’; a recent TVNZ Feature I directed, would not have been possible if we were not able to use TVNZ Studios at Avalon as a production base. It is a fantastic facility that I have spent my life working in. I feel that TVNZ under successive CEO”s like Rick Ellis have betrayed not only those skilled workers at Avalon, but the very foundations that state broadcasting was built on. Avalon was created solely for the purpose of providing local drama and entertainment. The political will or courage to persevere with that vision has slipped away. While many hipsters and film makers were outraged by the words Wellywood on our hillsides, there were few protests as it was announced that Avalon was going to be shut forever.
