‘Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire’ is an unflinching and funny look at a 16 year old girl trying to save her self from a home life that is pretty much like hell.
When the film was released in NZ, all they did was go on and on about the home life Precious has to live with, (sexual, physical and emotional violence). But the joy of the story, which is true, is seeing how Precious gets a life through finally finding her worth within herself.
Pregnant with her second child, the film follows Precious as she needs just the simplest of kindness to give her some hope. Gabourey Sidibe is amazing in the title role. She takes a role that could be a total victim and makes her a living human that we just fall in love with. But Mo’nique is a revelation and totally deserved her Oscar win. Her final scene where she tries to justify her behaviour is breath-taking and heart breaking. Hopefully she will get other roles that are as strong as this.
So this is one of the best films about a tough subject and also has some of the best laughs. Totally recommended.
