Destiny Church co-founder Hannah Tamaki has been stood down from the Maori Women’s Welfare League, and three branches she helped establish have been disbanded.

Tamaki, the wife of Bishop Brian Tamaki, only learnt of the news through the media, her spokesperson Richard Lewis told Maori Television’s Te Kaea last night.

Tamaki and the league were embroiled in a lengthy debate last year when she bid for the presidency of the league.

She had been thrown off the ballot by league officials, but a High Court judge overturned that decision and allowed her to run for the presidency.

However, members of the 10 new Destiny branches of the league that she had established in Auckland were ineligible to vote.

Tamaki did not win the presidency, that role instead went to Katarina O’Brien.

“I think Hannah will be disappointed at the length of the stand down and the fact that the national executive has moved to even take this step,” Lewis said.
