Has Nora Ephron Died?
Well, according to Liz Smith in the New York Post…….YES! But I can find reference to her dying anywhere else……but this is hard to view as anything but a farewell………
Ironically, almost the last words Nora wrote were about me in a recent Vanity Fair where I appeared in Times Square on a horse and Nora extolled my long-life and its “virtues.” She was busy working on more exotic things. People who never dreamed she was ill, are crestfallen. Amazed. Stunned.
What a performance she always gave!
When she once signed a kidding letter to me, “Love, your sex slave” — I had to rejoin: “How dare you when you know I have always lusted after you?” The two of us, most of the rest of us – have always really only lusted after talent. And she had it all for the rest of us. She was the Untouchable, the Meryl Streep of our writing times, a peer to glance upwards at while you pretended to be her equal, a person you always wanted to be, to register with, to own as a sign that you, too, might be worthwhile.
I won’t say, “Rest in peace, Nora” – I will just ask “What the hell will we do without you?”
Maybe. I hope. Nora will answer. Nora, we ARE all basket cases. There was no one like you.
