Why Did Adam Lambert Apologize To ‘The Gay Community’?
“As a community, we’re a little bit resistant to a gay male pop star ourselves,” Lambert says. “It’s very easy for people to look at my origin, which is American Idol, and automatically assume that I’m a commercial sellout or a puppet or a flash in the pan. I don’t think I’m any of those things. There’s something weird there. We’re very eager to celebrate a strong female. But to celebrate a fellow gay man — it gets catty sometimes.”
People have been asking me for my ‘gay take’ on this comment from an interview with ‘Instinct’ magazine, and why Adam tweeted an apology to the ‘gay community’ for the comment. THESE ARE JUST MY IDEAS AS TO WHY THE SHIT ‘GAY PRESS’ ARE MAKING THIS A STORY…………..
1. No-one can speak for a ‘community’. Is always going to make it easy for anyone to say ‘that person does not represent me’.
2. Am not sure if the gay community is resistant to a out gay star, is more likely still in shock that a singer had the balls to actually come out in this political climate in America. America prefers it gay firmly in the closet, and many gays hate out proud gay men. So maybe not so much resistant as idiot assimilaters and ‘post gay’ scaredy cats. So, as Adam is the first singer to be out from the start of his career, may take the closet cases awhile to catch up and realize Adam being out will not get them bashed.
3. Don’t kick the hand that started you, as in ‘Idol’. He needs to remember his origin in on stage, not from ‘Idol’. And spread that good word. Theater is far cooler than ‘Idol’ can ever hope to be.
4. Don’t tell people what they think or how they feel. EVER.
5. The whole ‘diva’ comment is assured to get the gays ropable, and it has. THERE ARE NO FUCKING DIVAS NOW. Madonna was loved because she made great dance music in the 80′s and 90′s. You could dance to it in clubs. She is loved because she changed herself and music at that time. Adam, when you have been around for 30 years you can dis the classic divas. Until then……………….best to leave them behind.
6. Teenagers are behind the success of Katy Perry and Lady GaGa. Not gay men.
7. Saying the gay community never celebrate other gay mens’ success???? THAT IS WHAT GOT BACKS UP. Well, mine anyway.
8. Sadly, I think this comment on Queerty sums up how most of them seem to feel………….
His whiny rant reeks of entitlement.
Gay people are not obliged to buy his stuff and support him, just because he is gay.
…………………..People like your work if they like your music. It kinda reads like he expects gay people to like and support his music because he is gay. I don’t think he meant that, but it can be read that way. And they won’t.
His best idea now is to make good music that people like. Don’t pander, stop listening to everything the record company tells him, and MAKE AND RELEASE GOOD MUSIC.
AND HIS APOLOGY……
I’m still learning.Sometimes I state my opinions as fact and make generalizations.I apologize to the LGBT community.Great music is the key.
Ha, we agree, great music is the key.
TO BE HONEST, I AM IN SHOCK HE APOLOGIZED FOR A RATHER NOTHING COMMENT AND GOT AWAY SCOT FREE WITH HIS ‘HEY, LEAVE GALLIANO ALONE, HE MAKES PRETTY CLOTHES’ TWEET. IF THEIR WAS SUCH A THING AS ‘GAY MEDIA’ THAT FLIPPANT TO THE POINT OF IDIOTIC TWEET SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED. BUT THE GAY MEDIA LOVE AN EASY, NOTHING STORY. BLESS THIER LAZINESS. NOT. OH, AND ‘TRESPASSING’ SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE FIRST SINGLE ON ‘TRESPASSING’. RELEASING THE EMO SAMENESS OF ‘BTIKM’ WAS A BAD CHOICE AND TRESPASSING NEEDS TO BE HEARD NOW. IMO X

Steve, some of the comments you made were thoughtful but Adam didnt say gee I dunno why gay guys are not buying my music. He didnt say that the gay community never celebrates gay men’s successes. He said “to celebrate a fellow gay man – it gets catty sometimes”.
I would assume he is not talking about physical purchase support but general overall support in comments or whatever. And in that regard his statement is true, at least for him. He apologized for generalizing and maybe that is a big generality, I dont know, but has been true for him.
The thing is, he IS facing a hard road and trying to break through not even glass but cement ceilings in a very tough industry. His success would certainly benefit the gay community in general by make such inroads. So if for some reason ppl dont think that is enough of a reason to offer support (which to be honest I don’t understand at all)……….. at the very least, dont join in tearing him down. Yet he has gotten a lot of criticism from the gay community in general and indeed many “catty” bullshit comments joining in the chorus he already gets from all the other haters.
You dont have to like his music or support him but the he’s an ugly screaming queen harming the gay community by perpetuating negative stereoptype comments are unneccessary and yes, sorry, bitchy and catty.
ummmm, can you read and understand english love, i start the story with this…….People have been asking me for my ‘gay take’ on this comment from an interview with ‘Instinct’ magazine, and why Adam tweeted an apology to the ‘gay community’ for the comment. THESE ARE JUST MY IDEAS AS TO WHY THE SHIT ‘GAY PRESS’ ARE MAKING THIS A STORY…………..so i am not joining in anything love. learn comprehension and think before you comment
I can’t imagine why anyone would give a rats ass about anything at Queerty. Its a small blog of primarily like minded idiots. There’s only a few ppl that regularly go there that ever liked Adam. Most don’t and they don’t mind saying so. Their comments over the past 3 years have been as bad if not worse than something you’d find on Yahoo. Comments during Idol ragged about Adams complexion, his weight, his screeching. He didn’t have the body type they admired. He was to old. To ugly. Not gay enough. Yep they would write a blog and it would show up on a casual search and glamberts would go and defend Adam. Well you don’t go to someones house and tell them you don’t like the drapes without the owners getting defensive.
But you? You know Adam’s been dissed by many vocal gays. That whole community thing is ridiculous and perhaps non existent to you but I an assure you that in my neighborhood “community” is code for “us” not you. It is a word that is actively used in this area. And if you are not gay, no matter who work with or play with, no matter how many of your friends are gay. no matter how many ppl of your own sex you have had sex with you can never be part of the “community” the “family”.
Adam need to stop trying to make everyone happy. It can’t be done. I wish he never apologized to anyone. Anyone that cant see him being criticized “by his own”, has their heads up their ass. Basically anyone can be a self-righteous critic no mater what their orientation and Queerty has excelled at saying shit about Adam.
Ps what Adam said is what it looks like to many of us. I can’t imagine how he could see it any other way.
I don’t think you read of the context I put my comments in. and you are crazy to read message board comments, people on them are awful types who do not warrant our attention x
I have to admit that I will on occasion go there to see what those assholes have to say. In fact after that comment I went there and the same old people were making the same old comments. I make sure I never comment there.
Just to say that although there are a lot of total idiots in comments sections, that is often where the most interesting debate is, and also where things get corrected when an article has been poorly written and researched, or is just total fabrication. So I usually find them well worth a look despite the moronic comments often found there
You have, in my eyes, earned huge points for your mindpower(not that I haven’t admired your comments before now.) I would admire any Adam fan that ventures into the comments section of most celebrity news outlets. My god some of the commenters there are messed up BIG TIME! I’ve always lacked in the area of stating my opinions in an unafraid yet reasonable manner so I love any fan that can.
Thank you, I try my best
I don’t expect gay men to love Adam’s music because he is gay, but I’ve noticed that some of the most vicious haters on blog posts appear to be, in fact, gay men. Still recall from the early days one fellow (allegedly from Hollywood) who would post his hatred of Adam every spot he could find, repeatedly stating that Adam’s 15 mins were almost up. Well, they weren’t then, and they aren’t now, but that didn’t stop him or any of the haters. Then again, I don’t understand why anyone, of any sexuality, would spend their time trolling Internet blogs and comments sections for the purpose of hating on anyone. Just seems more striking, perhaps more ironic, when those haters are themselves gay.
Steve, Adam was speaking to the comments he reads at all Gay sites. Some of them from the very beginning have been beneath contempt. I really don’t understand how you as a gay man can list such utter crap giving one excuse after another for the why. Diversity is a dirty word in the Gay community. A low key gay man acting straight is so acceptable, but here comes a proud gay man who is so enormously talented, flamboyant, at times, exciting and oh so sexy, is ridiculed. The not liking is music is such a cop out! Adam is an ever evolving artist and Trespassing is the most exciting music to come along in such a long time. No, there is no excuse for the cattiness and put downs. I don’t accept any of the whys on your list and Adam owed no apology, except to state his remark to encompass a whole community, but in reality I have not seen that community back him in any way shape or form so it would be very easy for Adam to speak to it as a whole!!
well barbis, hard nasty reaction
It’s a tricky one, there is a perception that gay men like Divas, and Adam certainly likes female artists himself, But isn’t that a bit of a stereotype? I’ve never understood it much, I can understand if transsexuals or drag queens like female artists because that seems to be what they aspire to. But I would have thought that most gay men who are happy being men would like attractive male artists. I know as a straight woman that I feel more attracted to male artists than female.
I don’t know if good music is the key either, because there are a lot of people gay and straight who follow people like Britney Spiers and Cheryl Cole who to me have very minimal talent and can’t sing live to save their lives.
Adam was probably wrong to make such sweeping generalisations. I don’t know what Adam had been reading about himself or what kind of mood he was in when he made those comments, but I have seen a lot of very nasty uncalled for comments about Adam in comments sections under articles about him in the gay press, I’ve argued with a few people myself but the usual reply is ‘if you’re not gay you shouldn’t comment here anyway’ Usually followed by nasty comments about Adams fans and how they have no right to try to engage with gay people if they aren’t gay themselves. Reading that sort of thing about yourself could put anyone in a bad mood. Really some of those comments are more bullying in nature than anything written by a homophobe under one of Adams videos.
I totally agree with you that they have released the wrong singles, especially NCOE, but even though Cuckoo and Trespassing were voted favourites in the fan run poll, when radio producers were consulted they said that the song they were most likely to play would be NCOE, I think Adam was angling for Trespassing to be released which was why he sang it at the NNN awards. But radio play is apparently up to Radio producers and they apparently have crap taste.
Adam isn’t perfect as the Galliano thing shows, but then he is only human and he has apologised, he’s still head and shoulders above most celebrities as far as dignity and morality goes. Add I think there are a lot more people who owe him an apology than he needs to apologise to.
