TELEVISION icon Bert Newton says his troubled son Matthew Newton still has the support of his family and remains hopeful the actor can get his life back on track.
Matthew Newton, 35, who is already facing charges in Sydney for assaulting a taxi driver and in the US for resisting arrest during an incident at a Miami bar earlier this month, is now alleged to have punched a hotel clerk in the face in Miami on April 17.
Bert Newton said he had not spoken to Matthew today, but had kept in close contact with his son in recent days.
“We’re getting through it. It’s been going on for a fair while now, but we’re strong people, and we have some good things happening in our lives, too,” Mr Newton said. “We’re pretty positive people.”
“We would like this to have a happy ending and I’m sure it’s still possible there will be a happy ending.
