On ‘Allvoices’, PrimeTV’ and ‘NewstalkZB’ political ‘journalist’ has a go at Mayoral Candidate. Unfortunatly, all his assertions are wrong, and one wonders if he thought of ‘checking his facts’, something decent journalists do. The full article is here.
There are two letters that should be missing from the names of one of Auckland’s Mayoral candidates and that’s the s’s. Remove them from Simon Prast and you get I’m on Prat which is what this self proclaimed actor and director clearly is.
He reckons the most pernicious drug that’s ever hit the streets, P, should be legalised. And he’s making much play of the fact that he’s written to the Mayors of London and New York and even the son of assassinated US Senator Robert F Kennedy for advice.
The Mayor of the Big Apple wasn’t biting but the Big Red Boris Johnson told him how being Mayor’s the best possible job and wished him luck which he’ll need plenty of.
Robert’s nephew Max was clearly confused congratulating Prat and describing the City of Fails as perhaps being the most beautiful capital in the world.
A text to Banksie asking why he wasn’t seeking advice from the big wigs elicited a response wondering why Prat hadn’t given him a call, saying he could have saved money and he couldn’t told him all he needed to know.
Well, Simon never said ‘P’ should be legalised. Here is his reply to some very sloppy journalism…..
There is a difference between the effectiveness of prohibition (my point) and legalisation. Prohibition is a law of opposite and unintended consequence, worsening the very problem it seeks to address.
The Eighteenth Amendment (Amendment XVIII) of the United States Constitution established (Alcohol) Prohibition in the United States. Its ratification was certified on January 16, 1919. It is the only amendment to the Constitution that has been repealed (by the Twenty-first Amendment) (1933).
Around the world, Governments are realising the “War on Drugs” has only served to make the problem more pervasive and dangerous. Not so in NZ however.
Our Drug Laws have no basis in scientific research or evidence, just political opportunism. I seek to redress this waste of human and financial resource and improve the quality of life for those many Aucklanders and their families who struggle with addiction and its social/ legal / financial consequences.

•Establish a Blue-Ribbon Panel of interested parties to lead discussion and find solutions to Auckland’s substance abuse problems, Special emphasis should be given to scaling up proven and evidence-based prevention, treatment, and harm reduction strategies; further evaluation of the impacts of drug policies and research in the area of illicit drug policy; and expanded knowledge related to illicit drug policy so that public policy can be fully informed by the best available evidence.

As for the outburst, ‘senior’ political commentator Mr Soper has taken issue with the fact that I emailed Boris Johnson (Mayor of London), Michael Bloomberg (Mayor of New York) and Max Kennedy (son of RFK / nephew of JFK), as reported (amazingly) in yesterday’s NZ Herald. In the same edition, Banks and Brown are reported arguing over who has the best relationship with John Key. He failed had no problem with this.
I asked both Mayors how they managed the relationship between local and central government. I contacted Max Kennedy merely to express my long-time admiration for his family’s commitment to public servce. To their enormous credit, both he and Boris Johnson responded.
Max Kennedy has a local connection. He is currently restoring a boat built in AK in 1928 which shall serve as a Museum on the largest slave breakout in US history (see www.pearlcoalition.com). See his full response on my homepage on simonprast.com
Barry Soper’s (or Barely Sober’s) piece is barely comprehensible and factually inconsistent. He calls me a self-proclaimed actor / director. Would that self-proclamation could make things so. I guess that would make it the self-proclaimed Auckland Theatre Company: the self-proclaimed Auckland Festival : the self-proclaimed GLOSS : most recently : the self-proclaimed THIS IS NOT MY LIFE.
After many years in the business, I have developed a thick skin. He can call me what he likes. It speaks volumes about him.
Sometimes, you have to wonder if these guys are for real!
